Contributions of mean and shape of blood pressure distribution to worldwide trends and variations in raised blood pressure: A pooled analysis of 1018…

2018

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean dia…

Measurement Invariance of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Among Chinese and South Asian Ethnic Minority Adolescents in Hong Ko…

2020

Seven hundred adolescents (Chinese = 50%; South Asian ethnic minority = 50%) with mean age of 15.3 years (SD = 1.53). Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis was performed to assess measurement invariance of the MSPSS scale across Chinese and South Asian ethnic minority samples. Results show that the original three-factor structure of the MSPSS was supported in both samples. Measurement invariance was supported in terms of configural, metric, and partial scalar invariance. Given partial scalar invariance was achieved, the latent mean differences were compared across samples. Chinese adolescents had higher levels of all three types of social support when compared with their South Asian ethni…

Geochemical implications for changing dust supply by the Indian Monsoon system to the Arabian Sea during the last glacial cycle

2004

Element concentrations of 43 elements as well as inorganic and organic carbon content of sediment core 70KL from the western Arabian Sea were measured with high (1 cm) sample resolution. Principal components of the sediment’s chemical composition were determined with the help of statistical principle component analysis. These components are representing the major environmental factors at the site. The most important processes controlling the observed variations are the changing lithogenic influx derived from the major wind systems of the region (i.e., the Arabian northwesterly winds, the northeast winter monsoon and the southwest summer monsoon), summer monsoon associated upwelling and biog…

June-september rainfall in north-eastern Africa and atmospheric signals over the tropics: A zonal perspective

1995

The connection between rainfall in northeast Africa (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda) and various atmospheric indicators from the tropics have been investigated for the northern summer season. Variables used include zonal wind at 700 hPa and 200 hPa, sea-level pressure, and rainfall over other tropical areas, for the period 1951–1988. Strong significant correlations are shown with the Southern Oscillation and the components of the Walker cell in the Pacific Ocean. Droughts in the Ethiopia-Uganda area are associated with El Nino events and, moreover, with above normal pressure and droughts over India. Other significant relationships exist with the African monso…

The Stationarity of Lead-Lag Teleconnections with East Africa Rainfall and its Incidence on Seasonal Predictability

2001

East Africa experiences large interannual rainfall variations, which can lead to severe droughts, as in 1984 in Ethiopia, or extensive flooding, as in 1997 in Somalia and Kenya. In the last 15 years, significant advances have been made in relating these variations to large-scale ocean-atmosphere anomalies, of which those associated to ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) come first. The additional importance of sea-surface variations in the Tropical Atlantic and Indian Oceans is becoming established. Although 20th century East African precipitation series did not experience decadal-scale trends as significant as those found in the sahelian belt, the correlation with ENSO, the Indian monsoon …

Nile Basin Climates

2009

The climate of the Nile Basin is characterised by a strong latitudinal wetness gradient. Whereas the areas north of 18°N remain dry most of the year, to the south there is a gradual increase of monsoon precipitation amounts. Rainfall regimes can be divided into 9 types, among which summer peak regimes dominate. In the southern half of the basin, mesoscale circulation features and associated contrasts in local precipitation patterns develop as a result of a complex interplay involving topography, lakes and swamps. Precipitation changes and variability show up as 3 distinct modes of variability. Drying trends since the 1950s are found in central Sudan and to some extent the Ethiopian Highland…

Climate variations of Central Asia on orbital to millennial timescales

2016

AbstractThe extent to which climate variability in Central Asia is causally linked to large-scale changes in the Asian monsoon on varying timescales remains a longstanding question. Here we present precisely dated high-resolution speleothem oxygen-carbon isotope and trace element records of Central Asia’s hydroclimate variability from Tonnel’naya cave, Uzbekistan and Kesang cave, western China. On orbital timescales, the supra-regional climate variance, inferred from our oxygen isotope records, exhibits a precessional rhythm, punctuated by millennial-scale abrupt climate events, suggesting a close coupling with the Asian monsoon. However, the local hydroclimatic variability at both cave sit…

Crowdfunding Prospects in New Emerging Markets: The Cases of India and Bangladesh

2020

AbstractCrowdfunding is a viable approach to financing start-ups and supporting social causes in advanced economies. The World Bank estimates a vast potential for crowdfunding also in emerging markets. The South Asia region consists of predominantly collectivist societies where helping others through donations is an integral part of prevailing religious obligations and societal norms. Thus, these countries share certain cultural and religious traits that are highly consistent with the principles of crowdfunding. In the current chapter, we explore the history, ongoing activity, and future prospects of crowdfunding in new emerging markets, specifically, India and Bangladesh. We observe that I…
